Friends, Special Collections help celebrate 25th anniversary of Prickly Pear Press

Friends of the Library and of the Prickly Pear Press gathered in the library reading room the evening of October 9th to celebrate twenty-five years of publishing Texas poets and poetry by the Press. The evening also opened the library's exhibit highlighting the publications of the Press as well as a display of items from the Prickly Pear archive which Special Collections holds. Founding editor of the press, Dave Oliphant, spoke about editing and publishing Texas poets and about his experiences a poet, editor, translator, and publisher. Maria Oliphant, Dave's wife, followed with a very different view of the enterprise of regional publishing, that of long-suffering wife. Dallas Graphic designer, Jim Jacobs concluded the planned program. Jacobs has been the principal designer for the Press he last twenty-five years and also life-long friend of Dave and Maria. Jim talked about working with Dave on the design of books and the changes that have occurred since beginning the Press.

Following the program, several of the poets represented in both the Press's first anthology, The New Breed, and Roundup, the Press's 25th anniversary anthology, made brief remarks about the Press and working with Dave. They also read a poem each from the forthcoming anthology.

The Prickly Pear Press exhibit will remain in the lobby until December 1st. A web version will be added to the Special Collections web page soon thereafter.
