Friends Annual Gift
by Roger Rainwater

Through the generosity of the Friends annual gift, Special Collections has been able to acquire an unusual and interesting T. S. Eliot item. In 1930, Eliot’s publisher, Faber & Faber, originally intended to publish his poem, “Ash Wednesday,” in a large paper, quarto, edition.  A very limited number of proofs, in two forms, were printed at The Curwen Press in March of that year and at least one publisher’s “dummy” binding was made. This quarto edition was abandoned and the poem was later published in a smaller size.  The Friends gift consists of both known states of the large paper proofs showing minor variations and the dummy binding, which may be unique. Thank you Friends for your continuing support.
