Oresteria is Gift to Special Collection

Through the generosity of the Friends, Special Collections has acquired a set of the Gehenna Press Oresteia by Aeschylus. This magnificent work was the final collaboration between the English Poet Laureate Ted Hughes, who translated the text, and the artist Leonard Baskin; a creative relationship that began in 1959. Baskin completed illustrations for the Oresteia in June 2000, just a few days before he died. Sixty copies of this three-volume work have been printed on Italian handmade paper, made for Gehenna Press by Zecchi in Sicily. The text is set in Bruce Rogers' Centaur and Arrighi types. The woodcuts were printed from the original blocks. The edition was bound by Claudia Cohen. The colophon is signed by Carol Hughes and Lisa Unger Baskin.
