Mabel Major Papers Open to Researchers
By Mike Strom
Special Collections is pleased to announce that the Mabel Major Papers are processed and open to researchers. Major served as a member of the English Department faculty at Texas Christian University from 1919 to 1963. She specialized in Southwest literature and worked with fellow TCU faculty member Rebecca W. Smith to prepare the first all-Southwest literature anthology, The Southwest in Literature, published in 1929. She co-authored Southwest Heritage: A Literary History with Bibliography with Smith and T.M. Pearce in 1938 and worked with Pearce again on an anthology of Southwest poetry entitled Signature of the Sun: Southwest Verse 1900-1950. She received many awards during her career and, in 1964, TCU conferred upon her the honorary degree of Doctor of Literature. A finding aid for the papers is available in the Special Collections reading room. The Mabel Major Papers is one of several archival collections in Special Collections documenting the careers and accomplishments of TCU faculty, administrators, and alumni.
