Collections: the Music/Media Library contains a large repertory of music scores, collected works, reference works, and multidisciplinary sound and video recordings. The W.B. "Judge" Hamilton Audio/Visual Resource Center offers viewing and listening equipment for most types of media. The Media collection includes
- over 10,000 compact disc (CD) recordings
- over 5,000 long-playing records (LPs) and sound tapes
- over 7,000 academic and popular videos on DVD, VHS and laser disc
- hundreds of University recordings on various media
- the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition Archive
Multimedia databases enhance the TCU Library's sound, video, and music score holdings. Performing arts reference databases are also available, primarily to TCU faculty, staff and students. Some of these resources are linked in the Music research guide. For resources and services available to visitors, please consult Online music resources for visitors and the services page.
Access: online resources are available all days, all times. Non-reference books are accessible outside the M/ML entrance during most of the hours the library building is open. Music scores and reference books, located inside the M/ML, can be browsed freely during the hours the M/ML is open. Sound and video recording stacks are staff-only areas; recordings are retrieved by staff using call numbers. Descriptions of sound and video recordings can be browsed online. For access to the Van Cliburn Archive, contact Laura Ruede, the Van Cliburn Archivist.
Borrowing: current TCU students, faculty and staff may check out non-reference books for 1 to 4 months, depending on borrower status; video recordings for 1 week, sound recordings for 2 weeks and music scores for a month. Two renewals can be obtained unless a hold has been placed on the item. Special arrangements may be made with M/ML staff if more than 10 video or sound recordings are required for a class. Visitors may use M/ML materials on premises but may not check out sound recordings, videos or music scores.
Instruction: Music/Media Librarians Cari Alexander and Laura Ruede offer music and dance related library instruction and individual consultations on request.
