Message from the University Librarian

by Robert A. Seal

As we approach the Thanksgiving holidays, I am again grateful for the continued support of the Friends of the TCU Library. Thanks to you, our good Friends, the Library is able to maintain high quality in services and collections beyond the good support given us by the University. The Friends annual gifts allow us to acquire some very fine books and manuscripts for Special Collections as well as much needed computer equipment and other things to help us do our jobs better.

We are very excited about 1996/97 because we will be combining two sizable recent gifts, one from the Friends and another from the TCU Woman s Club, to purchase or construct attractive new display cases in the Library lobby. The exhibit cases will give the Library much needed, secure new space to show off our outstanding collections, as well as to accommodate traveling exhibitions from other institutions. This is just the latest example of the Friends generosity that has benefited us so much over the past 25 years.

As you can tell from reading this issue of Windows, the current year looks to be another busy one for the Library and the Friends. We had an excellent program by Dr. Paul Boller on political campaigns, just days before the elections in early November. Kate Lehrer—author of three novels, TCU alum, and wife of broadcaster Jim Lehrer—will speak on November 22. Elmer Kelton will headline the annual TCU Press & Friends Autograph Extravaganza on December 6. A very successful book sale benefiting the Friends took place on October 25, and more events are being planned for the spring. I hope that you will take advantage of all these wonderful opportunities and bring prospective new Friends with you each time you attend.

In closing, if you have a friend or business associate who would enjoy attending our events, using our fine Library, and supporting an important part of our great University, why not give a gift membership for the Friends this December? What better way to show your support for the Friends and to advance the goals of our group? Best wishes to all of you for a happy and safe holiday season.
