The Library now has the current best-sellers from Stephen King, Tom Clancy, and John Grisham. About a year ago we started making more popular books available to our users. We began subscribing to the McNaughton plan, by which we lease currently popular books from a vendor. When a book stops circulating, we return it to the vendor. Many academic libraries like the plan, because it lets them offer best-sellers that they may not want to add to their permanent book collections.
The Popular Reading Collection is shelved in the Reference Room. About 400 books make up the collection. Each month we add twenty new books and return the same number. Library staff select new titles from a catalog of forthcoming books. We try to choose titles that we think will appeal to a broad range of readers.
A look at the New York Times Book Review shows that the Library has seven of the top ten fiction best sellers. Some popular authors in the collection include Mary Higgins Clark, Danielle Steel, Covert Bailey, and Dick Francis. New books that will be appearing soon are the latest by Ken Follett, John LeCarre, Scott Turow, Sue Grafton, Billy Graham, Michael Crichton, Len Deighton, Tony Hillerman, Jonathan Kellerman, and Larry McMurtry. Come check out your favorite authors.
