Patricia J. Austin received the third Library General Staff Recognition Award at the annual staff, retirees, and Friends board luncheon in January. Pat joined the Library in 1984 as a library assistant in the Circulation Department and in 1990 was promoted to library supervisor, becoming head of the department. In that capacity she organized and supervised the monumental project of shifting the book stacks and helped set up the remote storage facility.
Since 1998 she has brought the same level of initiative, expertise, and cheerful good humor to the reference department. Her intelligence and natural people skills made her a very good reference assistant in a very short time. She organized the department into a cohesive unit where people and things have their logical places.
When there is a job to be done she is frequently the first to volunteer. She has chaired the social and furniture committees and served on the student training and public relations committees. Her capacities for hard work and "going that extra mile" seem limitless.
Quoting from the comments of one colleague, "surely we should all be fortunate enough to encounter at least once in our working lives someone who is able to organize our days, weeks; intuit our every need; understand and carry out our most vague directions; and to learn to do anything we need done. Such a person is Pat Austin."
