Special Collections recently added two important items to its shelves. The first, Marbling at the Heyeck Press by Robin Heyeck, is this year’s annual Friends gift to Special Collections. It is a wonderful description of the marbling work done by Ms Heyeck at her press in Woodside, California.

The book, one of 150 copies signed by the author, contains 28 mounted examples of marbled paper produced by Heyeck, and was published to celebrate the 10th anniversary of her press in 1986. Hand set, printed, and marbled by the author, this is a very fine production indeed, printed in Centaur and Arrighi types on dampened handmade Barcham Greens Langley paper.

The work has been bound by The Schuberth Bookbindery in gray marbled boards with a quarter gray morocco spine. Marbling at the Heyeck Press joins a dozen other examples of Ms Heyeck’s fine work.

The second addition is the complete Christmas numbers from Charles Dickens’s periodicals, Household Words and All the Year Round as issued in original wrappers. Published from 1850 to 1867 by Chapman & Hall, the 18 issues are housed in a handsome, custom-made quarter-leather slipcase with marbled boards having an elaborate gilt decorated spine. These items are particularly evocative of the Victorian era with their advertisements and illustrations not to mention the stories, poems, and plays.
