2013-2014 HIGHLIGHTS

The greatest strength of the Mary Couts Burnett Library is unquestionably the excellence of its staff. The positive morale and sheer love of Texas Christian University have produced an uncommon spirit of creativity and mutual support. This year, in particular, staff demonstrated a resilient ability to positively adapt to change as we prepared for renovation—moving of books, relocation of staff—imposing new responsibilities and new ways of doing things. In 2013-2014 librarians and staff helped to provide many resources and services as they connected with the TCU community.

RESEARCH LIBRARIANS

Poster promoting research librarians.

Our research librarians exist to connect the TCU campus community to information and knowledge critical for research and learning. This academic year Brenda, Robyn, Laura S., Ammie, Jeff, Diana, Cari, Laura R. and Alysha provided customized classroom and individual instruction, subject-specific reference assistance, and identified and promoted digital, institutional repository and scholarly communication initiatives.

INTERLIBRARY LOAN

Interlibrary Loan services allow the TCU community to borrow books that the TCU Library does not own. This service is available to currently enrolled TCU students as well as faculty and staff, through the end-user services known as ILL.

LIBRARY BOOK RELOCATING

A team of 40 library staffers and student workers helped sort, size and dot selected books for an off-campus move. These 800,000 volumes are now housed in an off-site Annex, but they'll be accessible to faculty and staff. It's all making way for a massive library makeover to bring the facility into the 21st century.

STUDENT SERVICES

The TCU Mary Couts Burnett Library is committed to the academic success of our students. In 2013-2014, the library was proud to offer these special student services:

THIRD ANNUAL FALL STUDENT WELCOME

This annual welcome event is the library's way of taking it to the people of TCU. Library staff welcomed students with an ice-cold bottle of water and answered questions. In between classes, students stopped by our tent to grab a cold drink along with reassurance as they entered a new year—or new phase—at TCU!

THIRD ANNUAL VALENTINE CONTEST

Emily Ricks, first-place winner of the I Love the TCU Library contest.

This annual contest is a favorite with TCU students. The contest encourages students to share what they love about the library.

  • First Place—Emily Ricks, Sophomore Business & Strategic Communiations major
  • Second Place—Christopher Terrell, Freshman Engineering major
  • Third Place—Michael Smith, Senior Psychology Major

TCU LIBRARY INTRODUCES THE "BUTTONS"

Buttons reading 'I Love the TCU Library' and 'Club Lib Rocks'.

The Library introduced a clever way to show our Horned Frog Pride while promoting the Library. The buttons (or pins) have become collector items with our students. The most popular buttons are I Love the TCU Library, Club Lib Rocks and during football season students collect the week's specialized button to BEAT the opposing team.

EXTENDED HOURS, FOOD AND THERAPY FOR FINALS WEEK

Monster Drinks' tent..

The Library was open 24/7 during finals weeks. During these late-night hours, students responded with record attendance throughout the nights. In addition, the library hosted study breaks with complimentary energy drinks sponsored by Monster Drinks, Pizza from Domino's, fresh iced tea from Chicken Express as well as free coffee sponsored by the TCU Student Government Association. To top it off, Therapy Dogs came to the rescue as they provided much needed stress relief to the students (and staff).

LIBRARY SOCIAL MEDIA—FACEBOOK AND TWITTER

The Library's Facebook and Twitter page has become part of our culture as the best way to share information and interact with students, faculty and the entire TCU community. Our Facebook and Twitter have reached a large number of students and community members. It's a smart way to stay connected!

STUDENT E-NEWSLETTER

A new student online newsletter, LibFrogs, keeps students up-to-date on student services and resources, important information on topics that affect students and updates, dates, activities and events scheduled at the TCU Library.
