British Periodicals

Note for Mac Users

PDF files in the British Periodicals database may not open correctly in newer versions of Mac OS X. The database vendor is working on fixing this. In the meantime, the following steps should enable you to open the PDF files on a Mac:

  1. Use Firefox rather than Safari when using British Periodicals Collection. If you don't already have Firefox installed, the free download and instructions are available from the Mozilla web site/a>.
  2. If you don't already have Acrobat Reader installed, you'll need to download and install it. The free Acrobat Reader download is available from Adobe. (The latest version of Mac OS X have a built-in "Preview" PDF viewer, but it is incompatible with the British Periodicals PDF files.)
  3. When you click on a British Periodicals PDF link, most of the screen will display a grey box with a link that reads "Click here to download plugin." Above that box should be a link that reads "Open with your PDF reader." Click on that.
  4. A box should come up that asks if you want to open the file using "Preview (default)". Click on the drop-down menu. If Acrobat Reader already appears as an option, select that. Otherwise, choose "Other" and then choose Acrobat Reader as the program to open the PDF file.
  5. The next time you open a PDF from British Periodicals, Acrobat Reader should appear as one of the options under "Preview (default)".
