“ Faculty Speak “

Each year, the Library invites remarkable speakers—TCU faculty—to share their

experiences and speak about their newest books or real-world experiences. Students,
faculty and Friends of the TCU Library alike, attend the speaker series.

        Dr. Kara Dixon Vuic
LCpl Benjamin W. Schmidt Professor of War, Conflict and
Society in Twentieth-Century America at TCU entertained
guests with her stories of women in World War I and how
these women have shaped today’s American society and
culture. It was intriguing to learn that as America was
preparing to enter the Great War, women of all ages were
called upon to assist in the effort and that women in Fort
Worth participated in the war effort. Vuic talked about how
the service of women during this conflict was significantly
different from that of earlier wars; how the role of women
changed during the Great War as many women took on
jobs of men; and the influence and expectations of women
and how their role in society changed. This lecture was a
        fascinating history lesson.

                                           WWI Exhibit

The library presented a World War I exhibition in observance of the centennial
anniversary of Armistice Day (November 11, 1918), exploring different facets of
                                            World War I.

The exhibit, located in the west entrance of the library, features items from
Government Documents and the Music/Media Library highlighting both
institutional and cultural responses to the war, while items from Special
Collections commemorate the participation of TCU students in the war effort.

In addition to this exhibit, WWI posters are displayed in the bridge ways between
Rees-Jones Hall and the library and special collections features children’s fiction
books published during WWI for young adults. Also in special collections are
artifacts on loan from the Military Museum of Fort Worth.

The exhibit is on display through December 31, 2018.
